References, Recommendations, Referrals are not just flattery. They can change the trajectory of your job search.

We tend to use the words synonymously.
The fact is that there
distinct differences.

References are about your Past, what you did and how you faced challenges in the Past. They validate your achievements and accomplishments.

Recommendations refer to your Present work.  They are generally written more formally, by clients, colleagues, happy customers, even current bosses.
They add to your credibility and validate your expertise and suitability for the role.

They give the company the assurance that you will be a good value addition to their team and strive to give your best performance.

In a way, they are a confirmation that the company is making the right choice and the candidate will also be perceived as a good culture fit for the company.

Many companies have an internal referral system, which works wonders in your job search.

Referrals are about your Future potential. There is a third party sponsoring and vouching for your future potential.

An internal referral has a  almost sure chance of being called for an Interview.
Over and above, the candidate has 15 times better chances of being selected.

Job seekers can  use References, Recommendations and Referrals to their best advantage.

A word of caution. It’s important to be intentional about Who to Ask, When to Ask, How to Ask and How to follow-up, without sounding pesky. Be polite and respectful of the person’s.

Since this often involves an appropriate monetary incentive to the concerned employee, it’s a miracle win:win situation. The employee giving the referral will also do her due diligence, because her credibility in the is also at stake.
