Of the 3Rs, Reading comes first – not without reason.
Decades ago, we had to rely on reading for learning. This paradigm has shifted in the last couple of decades with the arrival of the Internet and Digital Revolution
Today some of us are too preoccupied with social media to bother with books. Some may be too busy; others just don’t care. They get by watching TV, surfing social media etc.
But, there’s no gainsaying the many benefits of reading in various areas of life – brain development, reducing stress and anxiety, improving memory and concentration, increasing vocabulary etc
Just to name a few:
1. Mental Stimulation for our Brain. This has been well documented by research.Reading stimulates the mind and increases its capacity to retain and make connections.
2. Stress Reduction
Allows mental space to occupy ourselves with something interesting. The deep involvement in reading has a powerful Pause effect, to take our minds off the problems and anxieties we may be facing currently
3.Improves Memory
If we read a fictional book, we’re forced to remember names of characters.
Amazing fact about our brain is: it can retain a lot of information.& every new memory creates new brain pathways.
I personally realised this some years ago, when my husband came out of a 3 month coma, post a serious road accident.
4.Better Concentration
One of the worst outcomes of Technology today is that it has made us (me included) lazy & highly distractable.
Want food? Just open your phone and order via the app!
Want Clothes? Purchase online.
Want to remember something? Just put a reminder on the mobile.
5. Improves vocabulary
A great command over language, increases our self- confidence when speaking in public, in corporate meetings and other groups especially to an enlightened audience.
Reading has a huge impact on the quality and breadth of our Vocabulary.
6. Better writing skills. The best way to upgrade our writing skills is to increase our reading. The more we read, the better wr write.
Writing is an important skill today when everyone is striving to become an Author in her own right and might.
7. Increases Knowledge
In the knowledge economy in which we live today there is a clamour for more and more knowledge and information.
Reading serves this purpose better than any other medium.
8.Reading Motivates and Inspires
How many of us have been inspired by a book, a biography, an autobiography or maybe just a self-help books.
Books have the power to move people and even change lives.
9. Improves mental health and sleep patterns.
Research shows that reading also has valuable ancillary benefits. It contributes better mental wellbeing and improves sleep patterns.
No wonder it’s been said that the one who reads gets to live a thousand lives before shee dies.
