When the Job is Not a complete match – Whether to Apply or Not?

When the Job is Not a complete, Match – Whether to apply or not?
(Perspectives based on LinkedIn News)

We often tend to bypass job opportunities, simply because the Job Description does not match our skills set.

This is a real challenge for freshers  and entry level jobs,  according to consultant Janet T Phan in her article in the Havard Business Review.

However, based on her experience, she suggests that candidates should still give it a shot.

One may not fit every criterion,  but one may have other skills, strengths an experience,  which could be relevant to the role.

Phan suggests the following tips:

1.  Research people in roles similar to what you’re interested in. If you find similarities, the job maybe a good fit for you.

2. Craft a compelling cover letter to accompany your Resume, so as to grab the attention of the hiring manager. This becomes your lead magnet.

3. Showcase your written communication by highlighting your skills & experience as well as motivation & passion, specifically for the concerned role.

4. Believe in yourself. Apply and put yourself out there.  One never knows. There may be a role there, which may be a much better fit for you than the one you have applied for.

5. One doesn’t need to have a 100% match for the role, to get the job. A 65-70% alignment is good enough for you to apply.

6. All one needs is an understanding of the role and a willingness to learn.

7. You may not be perfectly matched to every qualification in the JD, but you may well be just the right candidate for this or other roles in the Company.

So overcome your inhibitions, put yourself out there and Apply for that Job!!
