How the trust model works.

How the Trust model works!
3  Elements

Teams and organisations are built around Trust.

Yet Trust is difficult to analyse because it arises out of a gut feeling rather  than a matter of considered choice.

It’s a myth to believe that Trust is dependent entirely on the other person.

It’s also a matter of our own responses and interactions to those behaviours.

1.     Trust in CHARACTER
Trust in the intent and motivation of the team members – honesty and integrity.

These are difficult to gauge but can be built up.

Shared team goals and collaboration help people see the big picture and their own role.

People  may not always be the problem. Some systems may need reworking.

Having direct conversation helps. Giving trust empowers individuals, makes them trust worthy, as strong  team contributors.

2     Trust in PERFORMANCE
This is a basic level trust about the work that needs to get done.

Trust that people will be accountable to fulfill their responsibilities.

An open environment encourages discussion and problem solving.

1 on 1 discussions help people to get clarity on obstacles that may be holding them back

Being fair and clear in giving feedback helps. Also listening intentionally to the other party.

Those struggling silently need to be identified and approached separately.

3.     Trust in JUDGEMENT and decision making

Good judgement is a muscle. Team members can be helped to build it.

A good way is discussing important decisions taken.

Taking the team through the process, the objective & subjective considerations  the risks and tradeoffs

Acknowledge that Mistakes will happen and that is Ok.

When a wrong decision is made be Curious rather than judgemental.  Understand the underlying assumptions and criteria.

Offering team members greater professional visibility both internally and externally helps to build confidence and interact with others.

Building people up for success – offering coaching and mentoring to those interested and who show potential.

Would love to hear your views on how Trust can be built up at the workplace.
