Mental Health – how to handle it at the interview & the workplace?
Mental health issues have come to the forefront thanks to the pandemic.
Research shows that anxiety and depression have risen almost 3-4 fold in many countries.
Workplace stress can compound mental health problems.
So it’s vital to understand the mental health policy of the company we work with or are interviewing with.
Before an interview it is important today, to research the company’s mental health policies either from their website, social media Or what their employees say.
The company’s culture and what they say about their work policies may help to unearth some red flags.
The language of the job description can also provide some clues.
A fast paced environment could potentially mean high stress.
Another red flag would be an expectation to work beyond working hours.
The Job Interview itself provides an opportunity to ask some revealing questions.
Not to sound overloaded, use expressions like mental wellness and emotional wellbeing.
Whether the company offers any mental wellness apps, to discreetly understand the company’s attitudes and whether they have given thought to such matters.
Trust your gut in this process.
Should you disclose a mental health illness?
The hiring process is not often the best time to do this.
In the interview process, it may not be necessary to disclose the condition.
However, this is an individual decision, depending on the individual’s circumstances.
When in a job, if the problem is likely to be exacerbated and affect your work, is the best time to bring it up with your boss, if you so decide.
However, it is important to remember that many companies have well intentioned policies, which they may find difficult to implement.
If you decide to have this conversation, it’s better to do it before the problem is full blown.
The companies response could also vary depending on the societal and geographical environment.
In India it appears many employees fear a loss of job, which makes them reluctant to bring it up.
They may choose to deal with it early through counseling, psychotherapy etc.
Would love to hear your perspectives on:
– how companies can build trust of employees in this matter.
