Returning to the workplace after a #career gap?
Returning to workplace after a gap can be tough. Whatever the reason – caring for a child or elderly parent, due to a major illness or a job loss.
The pandemic and the unemployment it brought in its wake, has increased the numbers of those re-entering the workplace.
Some tips to navigate the transition.
1. Boost self-confidence. Not working does not equal to not contributing. Instead of being apologetic, one can focus on all the useful activities undertaken and learnings from these.
2. Rebuild Networks online & offline, join groups, attend association meetings, arrange 1 on 1s with people in the industry. Start reading industry news, articles, magazines, newsletters.
3. Show your commitment by taking courses to fill your skill gaps or even getting a relevant certification
4. Revisit your marketing assets. Update your LinkedIn profile, get Recommendations from ex colleagues or bosses.
Rethink your Resume & Cover Letter to include current industry skills and showcase your transferable skills.
5. Get some current experience before and while you are looking to get back. Take up part-time & contract jobs, fixed term projects or even volunteering.
One doesn’t need to hide or lie about a work gap. Rather focus on what one did during the time.
Update, re-skill and display confidence to take on the role.
Please share your perspectives, which can help candidates in their ‘returnships’
