Workplace Shifts in 2023!
Uncertainties of economic slowdown & rising inflation, among other things, are likely to lead to workplace shifts in 2023.
Some of the trends we may see are mentioned below.
1. Hybrid rather than Remote is here to stay. The ‘return to office’ debate may continue; but Hybrid may well emerge the winner.
A LinkedIn analysis showed that remote postings have already dipped.
Employees are continuing to look for better work life balance.
Hybrid may become more formalised & structured, with employees knowing in advance which days to head to office.
2. The explosion of AI will continue to define how people work across industries.
On the flip side the need to humanise AI & align it to human psychology will become more obvious, though this will take time.
3. School ➡️ College ➡️ Work path may be turned on its head.
Higher education may have lost some of its sheen and attraction. Competition between colleges may well increase.
Degree requirements for jobs, has already dropped.
We may be moving in the direction of work first, then get the degree. Especially, since skills necessary for average jobs are changing rapidly.
Work has often been seen as a side gig, while earning a degree. This trend may well be reversed. Work my prove to be the core activity and learning, the side gig.
4.The side hustle may become a permanent reality, with inflation eating into household budgets. Gen Zers may no longer see a side hustle as something to be secretive about.
People may no longer rely on single employer for financial stability
A side hustle is becoming more & more common & this trend shows no sign of waning.
According to McKinsey & Co., nearly 25% of Gen Zers already have side hustles (data not specific in India).
‘Side hustles may become the main hustle for people’ says generational expert David Stillman.
6. Quieting the ‘Quiet Quitting’.
Employee engagement, had fallen to all time low during pandemic. Organisations will need to place far more emphasis on this to stave off burnout and improve retention.
7. Recession proofing talent
Organizations will emphasise upskilling, reskilling & repurposing existing talent to weather the economic situation.
The above list is neither comprehensive nor definitive.
