A shared mindset helps team building.
(thoughts triggered by an article in Harvard Business Review Türkiye)
Until recently coaching was considered a 1 on 1 activity.
But no matter how effective employees are as individuals, they contribute as a group.
A leader’s role as a team coach, can support the team as a unit, setting guidelines, routines, practices and providing learning opportunities.
Teams are the engine for the corporate machine.
They bring together diverse sets of skills to solve problems, innovate and execute strategy.
They are also where the work culture is shaped real time.
Newer employees can learn and older employees can share knowledge and experience.
Individual coaching is certainly valuable in elevating performance of employees.
No matter how effective individuals are, they contribute to a team and can benefit from shared perspectives.
This makes team coaching an important skill for today’s leaders.
Team Coaching makes it possible for members to go beyond their roles & understand each other’s strengths and weaknesses as well a building meaningful relationships with colleagues, not just the leader.
This creates a healthy balance between challenges and support resources.
In team based coaching, leaders are more likely to look at problems as opportunities for the growth of the whole team.
Team Coaching is likely to take little more time and energy, but the returns on team spirit and collective investment in the work are substantial.
Team leaders are more likely to use the Socratic method of asking questions rather than giving answers.
Team Coaching can change the work dynamic. Both successes and failures can be seen as learning opportunities.
Leaders will be encouraged to push the boundaries of what’s possible and even admit mistakes made.
The idea is to get people to repeatedly ask the question ‘Why? ‘
All members need to be given opportunities ti express their view.
Over time this will also reveal the underlying patterns of individuals, which may otherwise lie hidden under layers.
It will be critical for leaders going forward to develop good coaching skills among others.
