Intentional Learning

Intentional learning for career growth – 3x3x3 approach!

In today’s fast changing workplace employees need continuous learning to stay relevant.

Last year a McKinsey Quarterly shared a 3x3x3 approach for career growth

This is very topical today, when scores of organizations are recruiting freshers and providing training to fill the talent gap.

What drives us to learn something new? It’s essentially curiosity and a desire to keep growing.

Learning can be honed through practice.

An effective strategy to achieving learning goals incorporates  3 key elements:

Three goals:
While it’s okay to have a wide range of aspirations, it’s best to focus on no more than 3 at any given time.

Building a new capability is hard, requires focus & intentionality.

Having fewer concrete  goals allows  us to develop new habits.

At the same time having just one goal may miss opportunities to broaden impact & boost performance.

This is especially true in the post pandemic accelerated rate of change on all fronts.

We are in a living in a ‘Goldilocks Zone’ – not too many & not too few.

3 months:
Think 3 months for a break down goal.

3 months provides enough ‘runway’ to make tangible progress.

It also aligns with rhythm of organizational world of quarterly reporting.

Setting 3 month deadline forces us to break down long term goals into achievable chunks.

3 other people:
3 people who will help to work on development Goals.

Involving others in our learning is one of the most powerful tools to improve attainment.

Socialising a goal creates opportunities to celebrate & reinforce growth, a rich ecosystem for learning.

Talking to minimum of 3 people.
creates a healthy discipline in understanding the kind of support you need.

The Key is to choose people who have sufficient exposure & knowledge in the specific domains.

Even a single external buddy is better than none. But multiple sources help feedback & multiply learning opportunities

Intentional learning requires a bias for action

Using the 3x3x3 strategy can take some of the guesswork out of learning & provide a framework for continuous lifelong learning.
