Women’s Day 2024‼️
✴️The United Nations has
designated the Women’s Day 2024 theme as ‘Invest in Women: Accelerate Progress’
✴️The focus is on addressing economic disempowerment, while the campaign theme for this year is ‘Inspire Inclusion.’
✴️It highlights the significance of diversity & empowerment across all sectors of society.
But what’s the ground reality?
✴️Announcing a pregnancy should be a moment of celebration, yet for many working mothers-to-be, it often triggers apprehension about potential discrimination in the workplace.
✴️One cannot deny that various forms of injustice, including retrenchment, involuntary termination, and subtle biases often set in.
✴️These maternal biases (even though unconscious at times) contribute to an environment where injustice & inequality persist.
✴️Research also emphasises how discrimination against expectant moms is quite common in some workplaces.
✴️This highlights the need to address the widespread nature of the biases of various types that women in the workplace routinely face.
✴️This not only affects individual experiences but also harms workplace diversity, inclusion, & gender equality.
✴️Recognising the urgency of this issue, companies would do well to explore steps and policies on this year’s Women’s Day 2024,
to challenge the status quo and reduce discrimination, wherever it rears it’s head.
✴️The goal is to create a
supportive & fair environment where women can navigate both their careers &motherhood with respect and equality.
