The Cover Letter – First Cousin of Resume❓
⏺ 83% recruiters believe #Coverletter can bolster Resume.
⏺ Well crafted Cover Letter (about 250 words) showcases uniqueness, language skills, creativity & enthusiasm for specific job.
⏺ Not a waste of time (unless specifically instructed ‘not to’) when you’re up against sea of comparable skills & experience
⏺ Resume tells ‘WHAT’ about applicant.
⏺ Cover Letter helps to explain ‘WHY’.
⏺ Personality of applicant & why she’s attracted to the role.
⏺ How company’s vision, mission, values align with applicant’s.
⏺ Gives opportunity to connect dots on Resume & include important facts, NOT included on Resume.
⏺Imagine Simon Sinek selling a course of 25 minutes on Cover Letter during the pandemic for USD 40,& you will realise its importance.
⏺ Most importantly, it’s designed to get an interview, unlike Resume.
⏺ Cover Letter more reliable in determining applicant’s worth for interview.
⏺ Since it’s tailored to specific job.
Also interesting to the human reader, rather than the fatigue of reading identical Resumes.
⏺ Hiring managers tend to spend more time on Cover Letter than the 7 seconds on Resume.
♦Language needs to be crisp, sharp impactful.
♦Despite growing popularity of ‘hard sell’ today, hiring managers are averse to exaggerated & ‘Pushy’ Language.
♦Tone needs to be confident & enthusiastic, to display suitability for the job, & excitement for the role.
♦ Keep language modest & credible.
♦There’s no scope for incorrect grammar & typos .
♦Brevity is strongly preferred (no more than one page!)
Today’s social media, allows
access to validated information on any candidate, anywhere, any time.
LinkedIn provides “social proof” of experience & skills.
Recruiters today argue in favour of pre-employment testing & assessment.
In 2021, CEO of Recruit (which owns Glassdoor & Indeed) advocated for assessment-based
approach & bluntly declared resumes as ‘outdated’.
However, it’s important to note AI-based methods are NOT always the answer.
There’s evidence that algorithmic hiring can introduce unintended biases.
Currently, pre-employment assessments appear promising & are growing in popularity.
Their adoption may become more widespread in future.
However, as recruiters, we cannot afford to ignore Resumes & Cover Letters, till we have established the efficacy of other relevant tools.
Cover Letters Uncover More than Resumes Hide‼️‼️
