Past, Present, Future of Resumes‼️

⏺History:

➡️ Leonardo Da Vinci credited with creating first #resume in 1482.

➡️ In letter that landed him a job as Director of Festivities in Milan, Italy

➡️ This would be called a ‘cover letter’ today.

➡️  Historical records suggest in 16th century, traveling artisans used some form of resume to introduce themselves to employers.

➡️ After that, little is known, until the resume as we know it today, emerged in early 20th century.

➡️ With Industrialization, employers needed way to select candidates.

➡️ They had less time to spare, &  wanted to hire quickly.

➡️ Against this backdrop,  modern resumes  appeared around 1900, though term “resume” was not used until 1926.

⏺ Are Resumes  still Relevant?

➡️ Some say Resume has had its day.

➡️ With ‘social proof’ provided by platforms like LinkedIn, resumes are losing their importance.

➡️ Yet, most recuiters insist, it still has a role to play in  hiring process.

➡️ In recent article for Workable, former London Economist writer Daniel Howden explained “it has proven harder to kill the resume than
almost anyone anticipated”

➡️ Resumes may not do what we need them to, but they’re so well established, that we rely on them anyway

⏺ Resumes – what they do❓

➡️ Resume is not your autobiography – It’s more like  Marketing Ad.

➡️ Challenge is to build resume that doesn’t simply tell story about WHAT you want to be, but WHO you want to be.

➡️ In recent issue of London Economist (May 20, 2024) Bartleby suggests: not to forget that, what you leave out matters, as much as what you say.

➡️ Recruiters don’t take long to make  first impression – an average of 7.4 seconds.

➡️ You don’t get second chance to make a great ‘First Impression’.  So make it count!

➡️Task of Resume is inform &  importantly, not to put the reader off.

➡️ Use clean, simple format, avoid fancy fonts (Arial or Helvetica are fine; Century Gothic is not).

➡️Use bullet points instead of paragraphs, leave sufficient ‘white space’

➡️ Cliches like ‘passionate
professional’ ‘hardworking & committed’ can cause your  Resume to be passed over.

➡️ So can typos; so spell-check & proofread over & over.

➡️ Take  time to polish your Resume. condense, filter & distil, until it
captures the essence of YOU.

➡️ Resume should fit on a page, at most, page & half.

➡️ The older you get, the more you should prioritise work experience over education.

➡️ Tailor your résumé for each application,  highlighting relevant areas.

➡️ Quantify  accomplishments, with numbers & percentages for impact.

➡️ Don’t hide reasonable gaps in  résumé. Life happens & people need to take time off for parenting,  care giving.

➡️ But, a gap of many years or constant job-switching could be a ‘red flag’.

➡️ Avoid being too “self-centred”. ‘Modest Confidence’ is an appropriate strategy.
