Are you Eyeing that Promotion?
l
⏺Although we all aspire to a Promotion, decision isn’t entirely in our hands.
⏺ Certain proactive steps can, however, drastically increase the chances of Promotion.
In this post I will talk about one aspect viz. :
‘How to Make yourself Promotable?
♦Promotion need to be earned.
♦Qualities to exhibit‼️
1. You need to be Great at your Job. Simultaneously, to display that you’d be Good at the BIGGER job, as well. Prove you have Potential to Grow.
➡️ Push yourself continually to improve, upskill & prepare for next role.
➡️ Take on new & different responsibilities.
➡️ Volunteer for lateral moves, that provide opportunity to master new skills.
➡️ Actively solicit feedback. Understand strengths & build on them. Pick up skills to mitigate weaknesses.
➡️ Develop Growth Mindset, instead of just a Developing Mindset.
3. Be amiable, easy to work with; build strong relationships across organization.
➡️ Promotions don’t happen in vacuum; Normally, need greenlighting from others in the organization.
➡️ Fastest way to kill chances of promotion, is to make enemies.
➡️ You need people on your side, rooting for you.
➡️ Treat people with Respect, even if They don’t always treat You with Respect.
➡️ It might feel good to get frustrated at someone in the moment. In long run, however, it can hurt your chances of Promotion. .
4. Focus on Bigger Picture.
➡️ Best way to show promotability, is thinking strategically, beyond day-to-day matters.
➡️ Understand business & how you can contribute to it.
➡️ Learn organization’s culture & align behavior to it.
5. Be a “yes” person
➡️ This means saying “yes” to opportunities to expand your role, wherever & whenever possible, without losing focus on main role.
➡️ Taking on new responsibilities can help prove your ability to handle bigger job.
6. LISTEN
➡️ There’s no need to dominate every conversation to prove leadership.
➡️ Active Listening is best way to improve oneself & forge great
relationships.
7. Be Purposeful with Words – what you say and how you say it
➡️ As Elizabeth McLeod says, “Language is everything. Your words tell people who you are. Your language is imperative in your ability to get promoted.”
➡️ Use concise, clear, kind language.
➡️ Maya Angelou has famously said: “People will forget what you said. They will forget what you did.
But they will never forget How you made them FEEL.”
People don’t get Promoted for doing their jobs REALLY WELL.
They get Promoted by demonstrating their potential to DO MORE ‼️
